Albany Attorney to Address Annual Meeting of the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys

Albany, New York attorney, Michael W. Kessler has been invited to speak at the national annual conference of the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys (ABPLA) in San Diego, California on June 7, 2012. Mr. Kessler is one of only ten attorneys in New York State who is Board Certified by ABPLA in medical malpractice law, and the only one in the Capital District. The Board Certification process requires a demonstration of significant practice experience in medical negligence matters, peer and judicial recommendations, continuing education, as well as successful completion of a written examination.

Mr. Kessler’s topic will be “Using Actuarial Concepts to Defeat the Shortened Life Expectancy Defense.” He has spoken on this subject to legal groups all over the United States as well as in Europe, Australia, and Canada and authored a book chapter on life expectancy in catastrophic injury cases.

The cost of future care is often the largest component of damages for a catastrophically injured child. Therefore, an accurate determination of a plaintiff’s life expectancy is vital to assure appropriate compensation. Mr. Kessler will discuss actuarial principles, use of life expectancy literature, mortality tables, and techniques to effectively present life expectancy information to judges and juries.

Mr. Kessler focuses his practice exclusively on representing¬†catastrophically injured plaintiffs. In 2009 the New York State Bar Association published his book, Protecting the Catastrophically Injured Personal Injury Plaintiff’s Recovery: The Benefits and Risks of Structured Settlements and Their Alternatives in a Changing Economy. He is a member of the Albany, New York law firm of Rosenblum and Partners, LLP..
